BIR United Kingdom Chapter

Welcome! The goal of the BiR UK Chapter is to create a connected community of roboticists supporting inclusivity in the UK - Students, researchers, and practitioners - for sharing knowledge, mentoring, outreach and advocacy. We will be hosting networking events, workshops, career fairs, and outreach opportunities. The UK chapter is centered in a hub of academic and industry institutions and a fantastic place where we can work together to advance the goals of BiR.

To keep in touch with what we are up to, join the BiR Slack channel and mailing list! Within the BiR Slack, we have a dedicated channel (#uk-bir-community) where you can meet other local members and keep track of our events. And we look forward to meeting you all in person.

BiR UK Chapter: Leadership

  • Dr Letizia Gionfrida

Letizia Gionfrida is a Senior Lecturer in Computer and Robot Vision in the Department of Informatics at King’s College London. Her research sits at the intersection of computer and robot vision, human–robot interaction, and assistive and wearable robotics, with a particular interest in developing adaptive control systems that can perceive and respond to their users. She is a Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellow and recipient of the Philip Leverhulme Prize.

  • Eugenia Mawuenya Akpo

Eugenia Mawuenya Akpo is a PhD researcher at King’s College London working in computer vision and robotics for healthcare. Her research focuses on robot learning from human demonstrations, 3D human motion understanding, and robotic manipulation, with a particular interest in enabling robots to perform tasks autonomously in surgical and perioperative environments. She is also passionate about strengthening robotics research, education, and representation within Black communities and across Africa.

  • Dr. Amir Patel

Amir Patel is an Associate Professor in Robotics & AI in the Department of Computer Science at University College London (UCL), and served at University of Cape Town, where he directed the African Robotics Unit and remains an adjunct professor. His research explores the manoeuvrability of robotic and biological systems, especially cheetahs. He has held visiting positions at Carnegie Mellon University, Johns Hopkins University and the University of Oxford. His honours include a Google Research Scholar Award, two Oppenheimer Memorial Trust Fellowships, a MathWorks Research Award and an NRF Emerging Researcher Award.
